FLU SEASON?

A recent concern about the Human Swine Flu has generated numerous TV reports, news articles and documents on the internet.  Boissevain School teachers have been busy continuing their instruction to students on how to help prevent the spread of colds and flu.  We are also provided with proper steps to follow on Hand Hygiene and Cough Etiquette.

You are encouraged to remind your children of the importance of washing their hands and coughing into their sleeves.

Some excellent internet sites to consider are: http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/publichealth/. www.manitoba.ca or you can phone 788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257

NEW – Gymnasium Calendar

There is a new feature added to the Boissevain School Website.  On the left hand column, you will find the link to GYM SCHEDULE.  This is a Google calendar that shows the events taking place in the North and South Gyms and the time that these events will take place.  It is hoped that facility users will check this site before booking the gymnasium and also recheck the site to ensure the event they are attending has not been cancelled.

If you have any questions or would like to book the use of the school, please contact Boissevain School at 534–2494.

CLUB OPHELIA

A new extra-curricular club called Club Ophelia began in February at Boissevain School. Six students from High School, Brittani Wiebe, Jordyn Dickinson, Tricia Palmer, Brittany Hammond, Heather McKay and Alana Inverarity, were trained as mentors to help educate and empower girls to build healthy, positive relationships with their peers. Students are taught sound decision-making, conflict resolution, communication and other key life skills while participating in art-based activities such as photography, collage, role-playing, crafts, and tie-dyeing, etc. Throughout the 10 weeks, middle school girls meet with the mentors and their peers, once a week for an hour and a half, to focus on relationship building skills. Eleven girls have participated in the club and are looking forward to the parent reception when they can share what everyone has learned.

POWER SMART CFL SCHOOL PROGRAM

On May 1, students in Grades 5 and 6 received a fun, interactive and prize-filled Power Point presentation about energy efficient lighting.  Kristel Mann of Manitoba Hydro explained the benefits of using CFLs- Compact Fluorescent Lighting over traditional bulbs. Following the presentation, stations were set up with bulbs and information to put in reusable Hydro bags that the students delivered to 600 homes in Boissevain on Tuesday, May 5.  The students were divided into groups with ten bags per student and hung the bags on door knobs. The bulbs, when correctly used, can last up to four and a half years and are 8 times more efficient than traditional bulbs.  Manitoba Hydro generously donates .50 cents to The Boissevain Grades 5 and 6 classes for every package delivered.  By June 30, 2009, MB Hydro will have donated 110,000 bulbs to homes throughout Manitoba. Thank you to Kristel for her interesting and fun presentation.

Grade 5 Students are preparing the Power Smart Bags to distribute around Boissevain!

Work Site ~ Ed Albrecht Construction

Intern ~ Devin Delorme

What motivated you to pursue this particular career pathway?

I have always been interested in learning how to build and repair items.  I also wanted to obtain skills in this area so I can do my own repairs in the future.

How will this experience assist you with your future career planning?

It has helped give me an idea of what skills and knowledge are required in the carpentry field.  I am not certain of my career path at this time, but having this hands-on experience will perhaps help me succeed as a candidate for a position in construction or carpentry some day.

How will this experience assist you with your future career plans?

The experience working at GoodonÕs will help make the transition to Assiniboine Community College easier.  The skills and knowledge about procedures followed in an office environment will be a huge benefit to me as I enter the Business Administration Program.

What characteristic do you think is most important when working in an office environment?

I think organization is very important because when working at GoodonÕs you are often multi-tasking and have to know where you left off at one job when you return to it.

How will this experience assist you with your future career plans?

This experience has shown me what is expected of a Constable in a rural detachment of the RCMP.  The knowledge and skills I have gained from this Internship will be an asset when I apply for the RCMP.

What characteristics do you think are important to succeed in security work?

In security work, I think it is important to be patient and be able to redirect your focus from a relaxing situation to a chaotic one.  A good sense of humour, in my opinion, is also important.

What motivated you to pursue this particular career pathway?

I will be furthering my education in the area of civil engineering, and this motivated me to participate in an Internship with Ed because he has a great deal of experience in this field.  He has the patience to work through jobs with me and I now have more confidence in this area.

How will this experience assist you with your future career planning?

I want to work in the area of designing houses and working in construction.  This seemed to be a logical place to gain some experience.
