February 2010 ~ Boissevain School Newsletter
PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
On March 8, PAC will sponsor the annual presentation on the High School Program (especially important for parents and students entering grade 9 next year). Please note the time of the meeting will be at 7:00 pm in the Band Room.
ON LINE REPORTS
Parents of Grades 5 to 12 students will receive a letter in the mail describing the procedures to follow in accessing their childrenÕs marks, timetables and credits earned. The letter will contain a username and a password which can be changed to one you are familiar with. As parents gain access to the online report, they will be able to keep up to date on their childrenÕs progress viewing such things as marks, attendance and timetables. Parents who do not have online access will receive hardcopies of marks as has been our regular practice. If you have any questions about the online report, please phone the school at 534 2494.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS – HOMESTAY FAMILIES
Study Manitoba School Divisions is a consortium of five school divisions in Southwestern Manitoba to which Turtle Mountain School Division belongs. The aim of the consortium is to attract International Students to our area high schools to study along side Canadian students.
A professional photographer was in Boissevain School on Jan. 26th taking a series of pictures and video to include in the marketing of this program.
Part of the International Student program will be to match students with Homestay families. Students will come for one or two semesters and will become part of your family for the duration of their stay. Homestay families are required to provide the student with his/her own bedroom that must have a window, bed, desk and other daily necessities. Families are paid $600 per month to offset the cost of extra groceries, outings and activities. You do not need to have children the same age as incoming students to host a student.
To find out other information or if you are interested in starting an application please contact Rhonda Simon: (204) 483 – 6252 or contact the school.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT REPORT
by Ms. C. Dyck
It seems I always start this article off with..."We have been busy this month", and it seems this past December was no different. December always goes by so quickly! In the early part of the month, we had most of our Student Government away for a basketball trip, so the other members stepped up and kept things rolling. Thanks in a large part, to Angie Choy, our Deputy Prime Minister! We had a candy cane sale to raise funds for the theatre. (And our sugar levels!) It is a tasty way to help out a worthy cause. We also celebrated the Five Days of Christmas (a shorter version than we usually do) The weather didn't really cooperate so we didn't have a sleigh ride, but we had a great Extreme Christmas Relay which was a lot of fun to watch! The cookie eating, eggnog drinking contest was also "edge of your seat" type entertainment. It really got us in the mood for the holidays. We are into exams now so January was kind of low key for us. Taking in a few hockey and basketball games seemed to be the main focus for us. A good number of our members are on those teams so they are extra busy this time of year! February will see a few of our members attending a Rural Opportunities Youth conference in Souris to focus on the future of Rural Manitoba. ValentineÕs Day will surely have us participating in a few activities. Stay tuned for an update on those matters in the next newsletter.

CAREER & TECHNOLOGY STUDIES ~ Learning that builds bridges
Patty White ~ Co-ordinator
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ~ Òbecause education & training is part of good business practiceÓ
QUESTION: What motivated
you to pursue this particular career pathway?
Work Site ~ Prairie Partners
Intern ~ Heidi Kroeker
I wanted to take this opportunity to experience first hand how individuals with disabilities function in all aspects of the workplace. This differs from any other work I have done and I have enjoyed building relationships with individuals at Prairie Partners.
Work Site ~ RoscoÕs Bar and Vendor
Intern ~ Darren Sicinski
Completing a career project in Grade 9 business on Bartending motivated me to pursue an Internship in this area. As part of my Internship, I completed the ÒItÕs Good BusinessÓ course and learned a great deal about responsibility and dealing with a variety of situations in this work environment. Working at RoscoÕs Bar & Vendor has been an experience I have enjoyed more than I thought I could!
Work Site ~ Evergreen Place ~ Boissevain Hospital
Intern ~ Dorian Rourke
I was motivated to pursue the nursing/healthcare career pathway because the work is challenging, fast-paced and very important. Helping people and caring for them has always been an interest and was essential for choosing a career path to follow. I have learned that it takes a strong, compassionate person to care for others and I hope I have what it takes!
Work Site ~ Hair Teasers
Intern ~ Rebecca Mueller
Hair styling is a passion for me; I love everything about this industry! Making people feel great about their look and how they feel is definitely a key motivator for choosing this career pathway. Having the opportunity to complete an Internship at Hair Teasers with Tannis and Susan was a dream come true!
QUESTION: How will this
experience assist you with your future career planning?
Work Site ~ Manitoba Hydro
Intern ~ Phillip Wall
Working with the Boissevain team at Manitoba Hydro made me familiar with the different areas within this company including: Linesmen, Power Electricians, and Natural Gas workers and the education required for various positions. This learning experience is unique because it can not be taught in a traditional classroom setting. I plan to enrol in an Electrical Engineering course after graduation to obtain skills necessary to be a successful candidate for employment with Manitoba Hydro.
Work Site ~ Manitoba Hydro
Intern ~ Jordan Melsted
I have been interested in a career with Hydro for a few years, and completing my Internship at the Boissevain office has confirmed that goal. I was fortunate to be involved in a variety of areas including: Linesmen, Technical Electrician, Natural Gas and Meter Reading. I look forward to pursuing a career with Manitoba Hydro in the near future.
